Grazed on the farm
Whole Pig - $850 + Processing
Half Pig - $450 + Processing
Did you know there are over sixty different breeds of domesticated pigs? That is a whole lot of swine variety, but after doing our research we settled on a very particular type of pig for very specific reasons. The pigs we raise are called Idaho Pasture Pigs. We chose them not only because they are sweet tempered but also because they are grazing pigs, which makes the meat a beautiful red with good marbling - the fat on this breed is known for its smooth sweetness. In addition to being delicious, these pigs are nutrient rich and have not been exposed to pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizer. Their grazing is supplemented with a locally sourced custom grain mix with essential minerals.
We also raise our pigs with joyful care. At least twice a day we can be found scratching ears and rubbing bellies and interacting with them during feeding time. Besides how happy it makes us (I mean, how can you not be happy around these good natured piggles?) it also enables us to learn and know their individual and herd ways. We know our pigs, and they know us. We are very aware that we are raising them to be our food, and because we are grateful to and for them, we regard them well.
Ordering a whole or half pig gives you the option of selecting your cuts. It also allows you to take advantage of parts of the pig you may not have otherwise considered, such as fat, organ meat, and less familiar cuts.
Processing is handled by an independent custom processor, and the costs vary depending on choices you make. The typical cost for processing a whole pig is around $400, and $200 for a half pig.
We invite you to reach out to us if you would like to talk about purchasing a whole or half pig, or if you have questions. Thanks for getting this far into the website, and you have our promise that we will do everything we can to make your experience with The Commonplace Farm a good one.
